Testosterone for women

Testosterone isn't just a men's hormone.

Women make testosterone too, in the ovaries and adrenal glands. It plays a role in desire, arousal, mood, energy, and muscle and bone health. Levels fall gradually from your 20s and can drop sharply after your ovaries are removed. For many women, the first thing they notice is a sex drive that has quietly disappeared.

~1/10A woman's dose is roughly one-tenth of a typical man's dose, applied as a cream
Sound familiar?

"I just don't feel like myself anymore."

It's one of the most common things women say in midlife, and it's often brushed off. If any of these ring true, it may be worth a conversation with a provider.

The strongest research supports testosterone for low sexual desire that causes distress (called HSDD) in postmenopausal women.1 Your provider looks at your full picture, including other possible causes, before recommending anything.

  • You rarely think about sex anymore, and it bothers you
  • Arousal takes longer or feels harder to reach
  • Intimacy feels like a chore instead of something you want
  • The change started around perimenopause, menopause, or a hysterectomy
  • Your energy and motivation aren't what they used to be

Myth vs. fact

What most women get wrong about testosterone

Myth

"Testosterone is a male hormone."

Fact

Women naturally produce testosterone throughout life. It's one of several hormones that change in midlife.

Myth

"It'll make me bulky or masculine."

Fact

Women's treatment aims to bring levels back into the normal female range, not above it. Regular labs help keep it there.

Myth

"It's the same thing men take."

Fact

Same hormone, very different dose: roughly a tenth of a man's dose, as a cream you apply at home. No injections.

Myth

"There's no real research."

Fact

A 2019 global consensus statement, endorsed by leading menopause and endocrine societies, supports testosterone for postmenopausal women with HSDD.1

Follow-up labs check your levels. Your provider adjusts the dose if needed.

Months 3–6

Questions women ask

Women's TRT FAQ

Is testosterone safe for women?

Large reviews of clinical trials found that testosterone at female doses was generally well tolerated in the short term, with acne and extra hair growth as the most common side effects.2 Long-term data is still limited, which is why ongoing lab monitoring and provider check-ins are part of every plan.

Is this the same as hormone replacement (estrogen) therapy?

No. Testosterone isn't a replacement for estrogen therapy. Many women use it alongside estrogen. Tell your provider about anything you already take so they can plan around it.

Why are labs required?

Labs make sure testosterone is safe for you and that your dose keeps you in the normal female range. Here's what's required:

  • Before you start (baseline): Estradiol, Progesterone, Testosterone (Free & Total), SHBG, CBC, CMP, Lipid Panel, TSH, Free T4, and Free T3
  • At 12 weeks, if testosterone is prescribed: Estradiol, Testosterone (Free & Total), and CBC
  • At 1 year: CMP, Lipid Panel, Estradiol, Progesterone, and Testosterone (Free & Total)

Follow-up labs must be completed before your next refill or renewal.

How do I use the cream?

You apply a small amount to clean, dry skin once a day, in the area your provider recommends. Let it dry, then wash your hands.

Can my partner or kids be affected?

Testosterone can transfer through skin contact. Let the cream dry fully, wash your hands, and cover the area or avoid skin-to-skin contact there until it's absorbed.

I'm not in menopause yet. Can I still try it?

Research is strongest for postmenopausal women. For women who are still having periods, providers decide case by case after looking at your symptoms, history, and labs.3

What if it doesn't work for me?

Not every woman responds. If you haven't noticed a meaningful change after about 6 months, guidelines recommend stopping, and your provider will talk through other options with you.1
